Clutch Bite Point in Sim Racing: What It Is and Why It Matters

The clutch bite point is the exact position where the clutch starts to engage and the car begins to move. In racing, simulated or real, it decides how clean and fast you leave the grid or pit box.

What is the clutch bite point?

The clutch sits between the engine and the gearbox. As you release the clutch pedal (or clutch paddle) the clutch plates slip against each other until they start to bite. That engagement point is the bite point. Before it: the car does not move. After it: full torque transfer.

In a road car you barely notice it. In a race car with a carbon multi-plate clutch, where margins are measured in milliseconds, it is one of the most important settings for a race start.

How does it work in a real Formula 1 car?

An F1 car has two clutch paddles on the back of the wheel. The right paddle is used to fully release the clutch and is what the driver pulls for restarts. The left paddle is set to the exact bite point and is held at the start, then slowly released to control wheelspin and traction when the lights go out.

The engineering team adjusts the bite point continuously during a race weekend based on tyre temperature, track grip and how the clutch behaves as it heats up. Every mile changes it slightly, and they compensate in real time using telemetry.

Why clutch paddles on the wheel are rare at this price point

Most sim racing wheels under 5,000 SEK do not have clutch paddles. They are either an expensive add-on or removed to keep costs down. People use the clutch on the pedals instead, which works for road cars and rally but is not the same level of precision for standing starts in single-seaters or GT cars.

All RaceLoop rigs, Stage 1 (from 37,100 SEK) and Stage 2 (from 77,900 SEK), come with clutch paddles as standard on the wheel. Stage 1 includes the Simagic NEO X-310G with built-in paddles. Stage 2 with the Moza R21 and its wheel as well. It's a deliberate choice: we do not build rigs that remove real race car functions.

How do you set the bite point in sim racing?

In most games you will find it under steering or pedal settings. Look for "clutch bite point" or "launch control bite point."

Baseline setup: start at 50% and do a few practice starts. If the car spins, raise the bite point a bit (more progressive power). If it bogs down or stalls, lower it. The right feel is smooth but decisive acceleration without hesitation.

In ACC and iRacing you can also bind a wheel button to adjust the bite point live during the formation lap, just like in real racing.

Common questions

What is the clutch bite point in sim racing?
The clutch bite point is the position on the clutch pedal or paddle where the clutch begins to engage and the car starts moving. It's the position you hold at the start to control how much torque transfers to the wheels.
Do you need clutch paddles on the wheel for sim racing?
Not for every car type, but for formula cars, GT cars, and any driving with standing starts, paddles on the wheel give much better precision than a clutch pedal. It's also the realistic way those cars are driven.
Do RaceLoop rigs come with clutch paddles?
Yes. Every RaceLoop Stage 1 and Stage 2 rig comes with clutch paddles as standard on the wheel. It's included in the base price.
How do you set the bite point in ACC or iRacing?
In the steering settings, look for "clutch bite point" or "launch control". Start at 50%, do practice starts, and adjust until the car accelerates smoothly without wheelspin.
